Thursday- Greve in Chianti

We decided on a slow start and after breakfast had a wander around the property here.
We saw the chickens, roosters, bees, pigs, veggie gardens, grape vines and olive tress and the herb borders along the paths . We picked some sage and rosemary for tonight’s Tuscan stew we are planning to cook.

Around 11 we headed off to the Chianti region about an hours drive  away , south of Florence. Such a pretty drive with the rolling hills, the endless lines of vines laden with grapes and the silver and green olive tress. Tuscany is gorgeous. We had a discussion as we went about where we would buy if we had a million euros. The past few weeks I have been to Lucca, Rome, Umbria , Vento and now Tuscany. Oh to choose. Any suggestions?

We got to the tiny town of Greve , which is not a hill town but does have a very pretty piazza. We wandered around had lunch and the went to a tasting centre. It was such a great idea. You got a glass and a credit card which you loaded with dollars and then you could move around the huge cellar tasting wine.  They were in round centres with the bottle programmed to tip a taste of wine into your glass and deduct the amount . Better wines were about 2 euros a taste and lesser ones around 1 euro. Such a good idea.

I kindly offered to drive home – silly me. We took a different way and only got a little lost. Carmel sat in the front with me and the boys in the back asleep.

We got home and went for an afternoon walk to check out some properties nearby . We even heard some Aussies in a house nearby but didn’t identify ourselves!

Such a lovely evening sitting under the vines having a drink chatting and preparing our Tuscan soup . We have had a lovely time with Peter and Carmel , but I miss all the friends who have been here over the past few weeks. Hi to you all.

Tomorrow is our last day in San Gim before we head to France . Looking forward to a few days with Steve in the Loire Valley before meeting up with Peter and Carmel again in Paris.

Siena

Today we had another lovely breakfast looking towards the towers of San Gimignano. It is so awesome. We are very lucky to have such a beautiful spot.

The house is located at the end of a gravel drive  and is owned by a family named Montignani. Maris, Antonella, Roberto ( handsome son) and daughter Barbara who runs the business.

It is built using the stone and building materials from a house in northern Tuscany. They took 10 years to build the house and it is gorgeous. The visitors live upstairs and the family down – though you don’t see them much at all.

So we drove to Siena and found a great parking spot and went up the longest  escalators to reach the old town.

The weather was fantastic and the town busy but not overcrowded. Carmel and I walked the main street and did a little shopping. We met the boys for lunch at the Campo and imagined the fun it would be to be there during the Palio. After lunch we went walking and found the best shoes. The  lady there was so knowledgeable about shoes and feet. Carmel and I were in awe. She also told us we had patient husbands as they were waiting outside. She went on to tell us Italian men were not great partners.

We explored the back streets , saw the flags of the different communes, lights to match them, washing hanging across the road.
Peter and Carmel bought a beautiful tapestry. It showed The Kiss! It was really lovely and Steve declared that Pete won the shopping.

We returned home and decided to go to the restaurant Barbara suggested. It was 20 mins away but seemed to take for ever driving through the dark country side. We arrived at Casa Mais  outside Montelione and what a night. It was gorgeous. Atmosphere was just so lovely and the food very Tuscan and beautifully presented. I had a pork dish and loved it. It has a B&B on site so people can stay there . Google Borgo San Benedetto Montelione .

Got home tired but happy . Thank you Steve for driving.

San Gimignano

We love this area. It’s beautiful. The rolling hills, the vineyards, the views of San Gim, the food, wine,  the friendly people.

I have started a new chapter here. I miss my friends rom Rusticolucia – Narelle, Anne, Lindy, Geoff, Jill and Chris. We had a great time there.
Now in this lovely house we are starting a great week.
The Wilsons and the Harrisons have discovered they have many connections through their school days and after, and have shared many a story about people they know.

Sunday night we went to a concert in the town theatre and then had dinner in a very good restaurant . The fact it was pouring with rain made choosing one very easy. we had to be able to run to it. But we enjoyed it very much. I had veal with peppers. YUM.

The next day we went to Lucca. My home for two weeks. It felt so good to be returning and  showing everyone around. It was a little rainy which was a shame – but we managed to fit in a few sights and a long visit to my favourite shop – Lo Sorelle in the Antiteatro . It has gorgeous tablecloths and other assorted things. Carmel and Jill loved it and between us we bought a few things! Christmas will be great – lots of decorations, etc.

Steve won the shopping! He bought a new briefcase, Shoes, two belts, a toilet bag. Closely followed by Carmel with her tablecloth, woven bag, assorted lovely things. I got shoes, Jill a tablecloth. All in all a great day and lovely lunch at Sergios a little trattoria I had visited at least 3 times when I was in Lucca.

We got back to our house and Barbara has set up the table and then arrived with plate loads of antipasti. six different types – all delicious We washed it down with their own wine and olive oil. This was followed by pasta with a ragu of wild boar. Her gift to us was a cake made by nonna.

We had a wonderful night of stories, jokes, laughs and friendship.

Tomorrow the girls are visiting San Gim and the boys are doing “farm things”. Steve asked Barbara if they could help with the grape picking. I’m not sure she was overly enthusiastic!

Rusticolucia to San Gimingano

We spent last day exploring the area to the left of the house.

This included a spa town – Terme Eugenee. It was like entering a movie set or as Chris said ” a bit like the Stepford wives”. It was mostly new building and lots of hotels an manicured gardens. The people were older and quite manicured looking as well!

We were going to look at the  shops but as usual we arrived too late. So we walked around the town and found a cafe for lunch.  After a fairly ordinary lunch – except for Geoff who had an enormous calzoni  – the boys headed off to return the car to Padova.

So the girls thought a little spa treatment would be good so found a strange place where the staff were Brazilian and booked in for a pedicure for me, a manicure for Lindy and Jill decided we would run out of time so opted out.

We collected the boys from the train and headed home. The girls wanted the scenic route via the gelato shop but the boys choose the practical route, so after dropping them off the girls headed back out for
gelato but got distracted by the garden we had spied earlier in the day. It was magnificent. They are said to be now one of the most important Baroque gardens in the world. We wandered around the gardens with Lindy as our guide and discovered the statues, the maze, rabbit  island, the joke garden (getting its name form the water that spurted up as you walked past) . We had a lovely time and forgot about gelato!

That night we shared a beautiful last meal back at Da Mario. Thank you Wilsons and Shaws for joining me on a wonderful adventure.

The next morning after farewelling mama and papa we headed off to Poggibonsi to meet Steve. And there he was at the station. Lovely to see him again after such a long time.

We arrived at the house and it is so lovely. a true Tuscan farm house, built by Marais himself . His daughter Barbara is gorgeous and she seems to run the rental business. They all live downstairs but the house is so solid you don’t know they are there. We have a space with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
The kitchen has a double marble sink and exposed brick. There are large picture windows looking straight towards the towers of San Gim, a fireplace with the family crest painted above it, gorgeous furniture and a huge long table where we will spend many an hour sharing drinks and food. Perfect!
Such a pity no more friends will be here to share it after the Harrisons arrive  tonight.
The views from the house are amazing – straight to San Gimingnano .

We had a lovely dinner with Chris and Jill in the town before Carmel and Peter Harrison arrived around 9.30. After s few shared glasses of wine we went to sleep in our very comfortable rooms.

Bologna

Wednesday :

Today my lovely school friends left!
We had a slow start as they had to pack and Anne is a meticulous packer!
Then Anne confessed to a very sore foot and stayed at home while we went up to Arqua Petraca our nearby hill town. It’s a lovely little place and we met a few locals , which isn’t hard with Geoff Shaw around as he talks to everyone!
After lunch we drove them to Padova and tearfully hugged them goodbye.
Thank you my lovely friends for coming all this way to spend time together.
Thursday:
Another early start – which for me is hard!
We got the train from Monselice to Bologna, a trip of about and hour.
This time we started with coffee and then headed for the main piazza. I was here a few years ago, on my own and probably walked most of it so I became the unofficial guide. The others took the tour bus which is a good one as it gives a great overview of this lovely city. It is a city of towers and porticos.
While they were touring I walked and re-oriented myself and selected somewhere nice for lunch. I asked a lovely young women in a shop and she said to avoid the few near her shop- too touristico! And she guided me to an alley nearby and Tratorria Guido.
When the others arrived back we walked the few streets to the markets. They are great little markets with the most colourful vegetables. Vivid purple melanzana, stripy beans, flowering zucchini , tomatoes of all sizes and the most vibrant of colours from red to green. The fish was shiney , the squid  ink black, prawns  all shades of orange. Geoff bought his usual sausage to keep him going and the girls bought some aged balsamico to take back as gifts.
We made our way to the restaurant and, yes, it was a winner. Geoff and the daily special something he’s been wanting- corniglia or rabbit ! Lindy and Chris and the baked lamb and Jill had pappardelle ragu. All super delicious.
After lunch the boys left us to our wandering and we explored  the streets and piazzas including the lovely Santo Stefano where I had a lovely drink several years ago. This time we had  delicious gelati. It was gorgeous especially my new flavour – Italian opera! As everything in Italy is something of an opera (drama) it is an appropriate new flavour. It is creamy, a little sweet, explosions of flavour from the praline crips planted inside the gelato. Yum!
We discovered some more portico and a huge church where we rested our tired feet. We got the train back but not with out our own Italian Opera drama. We hadn’t validated the ticket and Geoff hopped off the train to do so and disappeared. We were thinking he wouldn’t make it back when all of a sudden there he was.
We arrived home hot, tired and very happy we had left some food from last night for our snack dinner. We had leftover cheese, pesto, olives, tomatoes, bread, and even some warm pork salad.  Oh did I mention I’m enjoying the Prosecco!
We all had a huge sleep last night and our last day here will be spent pottering in the area around our house. It edges onto the National Park and has some interesting towns nearby. There  are spas, so we might indulge in a mud bath or a ” treatment”. Perhaps a lovely lunch at an agriturismo as this area has lots to offer in the food area. It is different to Umbria and Tuscany but is so interesting and not overrun by tourists. It’s quieter and costs half as much.
The other night we had dinner at Da Mario a nearby little place tucked away in a country lane. It was fantastic and cost us all of $18 Australian dollars. We shared starters, had gorgeous mains and shared desert and vino della casa. Superb !

Rusticolucio- and goodbye to friends

One of my favourite things in Italy

I love Paris – as the song goes ….. I love Paris in the rain! Luckily as it has rained almost everyday. Not really heavy just a little bit.

Still we are getting out and seeing lots .
Some of the highlights:
Having lunch with Monique a young 26 year old friend of Peter and Carmel. She has a great job in Paris and had lots of stories to tell us about life in Paris – oh to be young!
Tuesday night we went to dinner at Annie and Serge’s flat, with their children Fabian 27 and Camille 23. Camille did an exchange and lived at the Harrison’s for 10 weeks. They are a lovely couple and we had lots of champagne and a beautiful dinner with a view of the Eiffel Tower. We started with a black skinned faddish and page. A pork cheek dish and five cheeses and then a strawberry tart! We walked a lot today.
Wednesday we met Annie for lunch at Madeleine and after she took me to her hairdresser to make an appointment for next week . Yes readers, I’m to have the French stylist and colourist! Just a little worried about the cost but it’s not every day I have my hair done in Paris.
Went to a Vivaldi concert at St Chappell. What a wonderful experience. Heavenly .
Thursday we met Jill and Chris again after their Croatia trip . Lovely treat to spend the day together. We went shopping for gifts for their daughters at a gorgeous little shop in the Marais, walked to the left bank and had lunch, then explored the area I’ll be returning to the week after next.
Thursday night we had dinner at Montmartre and then went to Moulin Rouge. What an experience ! We had to queue with everyone despite booking tickets . In we went to a huge theatre restaurant style place got our good table, ice bucket with 3 bottles of champagne, and then the show started . It was colourful, fast, fun and an eyeful! Spotted Morgan Kenny – daughter of Lisa and Grant. Such a pretty girl with big …… blue eyes.
Got home at 2.30 am so had to sleep in the next day . Took the number 69 bus all around the streets of Paris. What value for the price of a bus ticket.
Last dinner was at the same place as the first night. Very good food and waiters really friendly.
So now it’s goodbye to Paris for a week. Carmel and I are off to the Loire to a little place called Sancerre well known for its goats cheese and its white wine. Picking up a car tomorrow and off we go!
